Gubyaukgyi temple in Wetkyi-Inn

Gubyaukgyi temple in Wetkyi-Inn

The temple was built by Razakuman in the early thirteen century in the form of Mahabodi temple in Buddha Gaya, India.         Buddha Gaya is the Buddha birthplace in India that Buddhist people think is the holly place. Most Buddhist people want to see and go to Buddha Gaya in their lifetimes because they believe in Karma.
Located in Wetkyi-In village, Gubyaukgyi means the great painted cave temple. That is why, there are many mural paintings inside the temple. Observing the murals in the temple, the visitors can guess actual literature and artistic works of that age.
The significance of the temple is the Buddhist Jataka stories are painted on the interior wall of the temple. The main story is that the devil, Mara, fought with Buddha for getting the throne made of jewels together with the wild snakes and the wild elephants. Other stories on the small square panels are 28 different Buddhas under  the respective trees. Unfortunately, the important panel of mural was removed by Dr.Thomann when he visited Burma in 1899.          There are two temples with a name of Gubyaukgyi. One is in Wetkyi-In village and another one is in Myinkabar village.
There are more than five villages in Bagan. Those villages have existed since Bagan period. But, the villagers still maintain their traditional ways of life. Among the villages, Minnanthu village is popular to go and see for the visitors.
